The History of the Electric Motor

The Invention of the Electric Motor

The first electric motor was invented by British scientist Michael Faraday in 1821. Faraday discovered that by passing a current through a coil of wire, he could create a magnetic field that would cause a nearby magnet to rotate. This discovery laid the foundation for the development of the modern electric motor.

However, it wasn’t until the mid-19th century that practical electric motors were developed. American inventor Thomas Davenport is credited with building the first practical battery-powered electric motor in 1834. Davenport’s motor used a direct current (DC) power source and was used to power a small machine – a printing press.

Development of Electric Motors

Despite Davenport’s great discovery, electric motors were not used on a commercial level for another 50 years. In the late 1800s, the development of efficient electric motors accelerated, thanks to inventors such as Nikola Tesla and Thomas Edison. Tesla’s alternating current (AC) motor invention revolutionized the industry, making it possible to transmit electricity over long distances.

Modern Electric Motors

Today, electric motors are used in an even wider range of applications, from powered wheelchairs and stairlifts to industrial automation, transport and solar panels.
